How to apply for a visa with SkillSelect

Many visas that are available for workers often come as a result of employer sponsorship, but for those who wish to live and work in Australia but have no such sponsorship, applying through SkillSelect is another option.

The application is by invitation only, so to be eligible, you must lodge an expression of interest, have a job that is on the skilled occupation list, be less than 50 years old when you receive the invitation and score at least 60 on the points test.

If you are invited to apply for a visa, you will have 60 days to submit your application.
Your expression of interest will be examined through the documents you provide as part of a documents checklist. These include:

►Proof of identity, usually a birth certificate, but if one cannot be provided you can submit a driver's license, passport or other type of government issued identification.

►Any certificates regarding your relationship status - this may include a marriage certificate, divorce documents or death certificates.

►Evidence that the applicant meets the required level of English, except in countries where the applicant holds a passport from a country where it is the national language

►Medical reports and forms need to be completed to ensure that the applicant is healthy and is not carrying a condition which would exempt them from obtaining a visa

Documents that are not in English must be accompanied by a translation from an accredited translator.

Partners can travel with you as well as any dependant relatives or children, however they must meet their own criteria in the application.

Depending under which group the application falls, the priority with which your application may be processed can differ.

If your visa application is successful, you will receive your visa, the earliest at which you can enter Australia and further instructions for finalising your move down under.

This visa allows you and your family to enter Australia and work permanently (or temporarily depending on your subclass), study, enrol in Medicare, access some social security payments if you are eligible and eventually apply for Australian citizenship.

For your visa to remain valid, you must comply with all of its conditions and the laws of Australia.

Talk to a migration agent to discuss the best way to proceed with obtaining an immigration visa through SkillSelect.
