'NSW International Student of the Year Awards' winners announced

The five winners of the NSW International Student of the Year Awards were announced on October 10.

NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner explained that international students have a positive influence on the schools they attend in Australia, as well as the lives and education of their fellow students.

"NSW values their contributions and the cultural diversity they bring to our classrooms and our society," he said.

"Their presence helps to bring together people, cultures and ideas."

Two of the winners, Junxi (James) Tian and Yuhan (Wendy) Yang, are from China.

They both attend high schools in Sydney, and were granted awards in the Schools Category for the "leadership, interpersonal skills and social engagement" they've shown while in Australia.

Junxi is a senior prefect at Ashfield Boys High School, and travelled to New South Wales from Foshan in Guangdong. He does volunteer work for a number of organisations, including Red Cross Australia and the Salvation Army, and is on the Student Representatives Council.

Yuhan, from Beijing, began her studies at Blakehurst High School in 2012, and was recently appointed as a senior prefect.

Mr Stoner revealed that there are approximately 29,000 students from China that are currently studying in New South Wales.

If you are interested in travelling to New South Wales to study, you may want to get in touch with migration agents in Australia.

They can help you figure out what immigration visas you will need, as well as make the application process as easy and straightforward as possible.

There are a number of visa options for prospective international students to choose from, so having migration agents on hand to make sure you apply for the right one is important.

If, for instance, you would like to travel to New South Wales - or, indeed, anywhere else in Australia - to attend primary, junior secondary or secondary school, or an approved secondary school exchange program, you will need to apply for a 'Primary or Secondary School' subclass visa.

There is also a subclass visa for those wishing to undertake higher education in Australia.

This will enable you to complete a "bachelor degree, associate degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, higher education diploma, higher education advanced diploma or masters by coursework", according to the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

You should keep in mind that if you wish to complete a masters by research or a doctoral degree, you will need to apply for a different subclass visa.
