The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is currently taking place in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is attending.
This gathering of leaders from all 53 countries that belong to the Commonwealth takes place once every two years and is important for keeping the ties between our nations strong.
Ms Bishop plans to discuss trade and investment with government ministers of Sri Lanka and thinks this is a fantastic opportunity for the country to "underline its commitment to freedom, human rights and post-conflict reconciliation".
After the CHOGM, Ms Bishop will travel to India to meet with business and government leaders in New Delhi and Mumbai.
She is the first leader of the current government to visit India, a country the Foreign Minister calls "an important strategic partner for Australia".
India is our country's largest source of skilled migrant workers and international students. It's also Australia's fourth-biggest export market and one of our most valuable foreign investors.
