The 2013 World Travel Awards have just taken place, where Melbourne was granted the coveted title of "Australasia's Leading Meetings and Conference Destination".
So, migration agents in Melbourne could be seeing an influx of business visitors in the near future.
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher said it's the city's "infrastructure, intellectual capital, professional services and aesthetics" that make it an attractive location for business travellers looking to host events
She added that Melbourne has been chosen to host a number of high-profile conferences in the coming year, including the 22nd World Diabetes Congress in December for 12,500 people, the World Congress of Cardiology in May for 9,000 people and the International AIDS Conference in July for 14,000 people.
These are "three of the world's largest and most prestigious health and medical-related conferences," explained Ms Asher, and the fact the Melbourne will be the backdrop for them is an "outstanding achievement".
Karen Bolinger, chief executive officer of the Melbourne Convention Bureau, was also pleased with the result.
"The World Travel Awards represent the voice of the international travel and tourism industry," she said.
It looks as though registered migration agents around Melbourne will be seeing a lot more action from this industry in future.
