On Friday 5 May 2017, the Government confirmed that subject to the passage of relevant legislation, the temporary sponsored parent visa will be introduced during the 2017-18 Migration Programme year.  Due to lengthy delays involving passing of the legislation, the subclass 870 temporary parent visa was placed in an indefinite hiatus.

The temporary sponsored parent visa is designed to allow the parents of Australians to spend longer periods of time with their children in Australia without placing additional burden on Australia's health care system.  The introduction of the temporary sponsored parent visa was subject to passage of the Migration Amendment (Family Violence and other Measures) Bill 2016 (the Bill) through Parliament which was finally given Royal Assent in December 2018.

On 1 March 2019, Minister Coleman announced that applications to sponsor a parent for a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa will be open from 17 April 2019.

Businesses in Victoria's Great South Coast region will receive the boost they need with the Morrison Government finalising a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) with Warrnambool City Council.

The Great South Coast joins the Northern Territory, South Australia, Kalgoorlie-Boulder and Orana among the first regions in Australia to enter a five-year agreement enabling designated regions to respond to their unique workforce shortages.

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, David Coleman said the Federal Government is working to address the skills needs of regional Australia.

State Government of Victoria is seeking submissions in relation to its composition of the State Skilled Occupation List.  The initial deadline to provide submissions by 18 March has now been extended to 7 April 2019.

By way of background the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR), through the Skilled and Business Migration Program, is responsible for providing visa nomination to highly skilled and employable migrants to live and work in Victoria permanently (for the Skilled Nominated subclass 190 visa) or on a provisional basis (for the Skilled Regional subclass 489 (Provisional) visa).

In response to the ever-growing demand for migration to regional areas as well as to address skills shortages across Victoria, the State government has opened consultation process with relevant stakeholders.
