Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers.
Migration Alliance queried the status of Priority Group 5 applications last week. The DIBP have responded as follows:
Dear Ms Allan, XXXXXXX [name removed for privacy reasons] passed your e-mail to the Skilled Migration Policy branch as the issues raised by your members are handled in this branch.
As you would appreciate, Australia runs a demand driven skilled migration program to meet the current and emerging skill needs of the Australian labour market and to strengthen the whole economy. Skilled migration policies are tailored to meet this objective and have always changed to reflect the prevailing economic conditions of the time.
I note the frustration expressed by some migration agents at the length of time taken to process skilled migration visa applications. The Australian Government understands that migration is a major life decision and can be emotionally and financially stressful for applicants.
Australia is fortunate in that the number of people seeking skilled migration far exceeds the number of places available in the programme. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection can only grant the number of visas allocated by the Government in the annual migration programme and so must prioritise the order in which skilled migration applications are processed through priority processing arrangements. Priority processing arrangements ensure that the economy gets the skills it needs now, rather than those of visa applicants who applied first.
The Government is aware that priority processing impacts on many applicants who will have a longer wait for their visas to be processed. However, the Government must also take into account the effect of the difficult labour market conditions which migrants, Australian permanent residents and citizens currently face. Priority Group 5 applications are allocated when all available applications in higher priority groups are allocated, or in line with planning level requirements for each of the visa categories.
The Department is unable to give specific timeframes for when individual applications will be finalised, as this will depend on when the person applied and how many applications are received in higher priority groups. It is not possible to process applications outside of the priority processing arrangements. Applicants will only be contacted once their application is allocated to a case officer.
Information on priority processing and allocation dates is available on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website at:www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/estimated-allocation-times.htm.
Regards.

Totally disappointed by what the immi is doing on 886 group. What is wrong with us ? We paid to get education here and work for this country, we met all the criteria to submit our applications and now you are telling us we have to wait until all other priority groups are allocated.let me tell you something you might not know. Every year, the immi grants visa to those fake refugees, who made up stories either on politics or religions, fake single mum, who is still living with their husband, fake marriage, people who pay for the marriage visa with Australia citizen, ( the market price for marriage visa is around $60,000-$100,000), fake employee, who pay their employer to sponsor them, the funny part is they don't even work in the workplace, all the paperwork are made up to fool the immi. Moreover, the refugees and single mum get finance support from the Red Cross , ( some are getting approximately$ 300-500 per week) . These people are cheating for the visa , but the immi rather trust them and ignore 886. I would like to state and highlight that we 886 are educated and skilled, We are the one Australia need, and we are future Australian !
The update is released every month guys... It used to be updated every week then fortnight now every month!! it's not something new unfortunately I have been following it since 2012 desperately :-(
The question WHICH NO BODY HAS THE ANSWER FOR is; will there be any places available for priority group 5 applications left over from the higher priority applications in Feb? in March? or at all this financial year?!!
We need more voice and support like Ilaria said...
Hi
I am also in same boat.I applied 886 Visa in Dec,2009..but nothing heard from Immigration..
This is really sad and depressing..My daughter was born in 2010 and she is 5 yrs old now and she start going to school. Her passport got expired and going to renew it again...Its really annoying.Lets guys do something together..
Hi everyone,
I have a meeting with MP on 18 Feb. I met with his assistant last year but it didn't help. I requested meeting with him in person. Not sure how this will go but I m planning to take it out on him ( in a polite way offcourse). Any ideas or comments?! I Was thinking we may get together maybe meet up for a coffee or drink to share and discuss ideas for anything might be effective. Illaria, Bendana you guys have been quite lately?!!
Hi Guys.
Great Initiative Fred. Just a bit of suggestion, how about we prepare a common petition stating the trauma of wait and uncertainty of our future etc and get maximum signatures from our sponsors and submit to local MPs . I m sure they can't afford to lose couple of thousand votes?
Hey guys yes I agree we should push a petition first as there are lots of people from anywhere and online can be easier to raise our voices collectively and after that we could also organise a peaceful demonstration in front of DIAC but we need minimum 80/100 people involved .... how can we proceed in proceeding with the petition?
Looking forward to you all
HI fred, well done that you managed to organise a meeting with MP I would be very happy to meet for coffee with whoever would like to be involved and brainstorm on ideas for Fred to present to his meeting.
The best days for me where I can find some time are Monday or Fridays usually (less busy at work) but happy to try and accommodate with anyone else's! Let's do this!
Vicky,
I like your suggestion but again, we need a good number... we need participants. I don't believe they care about our trauma or mental health. Otherwise they would have processed the applications ages ago. Your suggestion would be perfect to draw the Ministers attention to this matter as votes mean more for them than us (human beings). Surely the MPs will listen to our sponsors as they are citizens. However, this must be done by most of us and the more letters go to the minister the more effective it will become.
I have been following DIBP's updates since 2012 and the information I gathered, and I am pretty sure most of group 5ers don't know yet, there may not be allocations this year and next year. 2 years ago and before there was a quota for group 5 I think there was something like 4400 places allocated to this category. Last year they changed it and they allocated no places for group 5 in the annual planning level. Only, if there will be left over places from higher priority groups which I doubt there will be as there is high number in the queue not to mention the new applications coming in. I am annoyed and extremely frustrated too. My wife is an Australian citizen supportive for a new partner visa but I am determined to fight for my right especially for the idea of them saying " do not contact us for your application'' and giving us the option of "withdraw your application but no refund".
Illaria,
Thanks for your response for the meeting. Is there anyone else would like to join us for a coffee. Let us know.
Hello All
Fred I do appreciate for the valuable information provided. Guys I am certain DIBP does not have any intention of processing our applications. They enjoying the wait and watch game with us. However as per current governments situation they cannot afford to lose single vote and when it's matter of thousands of votes they will do anything to get those votes.
Bottom line is ANYONE AMONG US GOOD IN IT can prepare an online petition on our behalf which can be sent online to everyone and download and sign. Because of the geographical barriers, not sure if everyone will be able to meet together and do any peaceful protest.
But when that petition would have signs of lots of people, then certainly DIBP can't just ignore it.
I am happy to pay my share or cost incurred in this task
Cheers
Sometimes everything just gets to you. Like it gets to me sometimes and I almost feel like running away from everything and all of this. Such an uncertainty even though everything else is seems fine. I deliberately switched off for sometime. The unfair attitude of the Immi. gets to me very bad. Esp. sometimes when I read other people's hardships.
I have found one more journalist and am in touch with him. Will update everyone with anything that comes up.
Fred, we're quite a few with you. Let us know when and where you'd like to meet and we'll try to be there. Getting the numbers up is imperative but also the tricky part. I work around Sydney CBD. Let me know. I'm up for this.
