Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers.
Migration Alliance queried the status of Priority Group 5 applications last week. The DIBP have responded as follows:
Dear Ms Allan, XXXXXXX [name removed for privacy reasons] passed your e-mail to the Skilled Migration Policy branch as the issues raised by your members are handled in this branch.
As you would appreciate, Australia runs a demand driven skilled migration program to meet the current and emerging skill needs of the Australian labour market and to strengthen the whole economy. Skilled migration policies are tailored to meet this objective and have always changed to reflect the prevailing economic conditions of the time.
I note the frustration expressed by some migration agents at the length of time taken to process skilled migration visa applications. The Australian Government understands that migration is a major life decision and can be emotionally and financially stressful for applicants.
Australia is fortunate in that the number of people seeking skilled migration far exceeds the number of places available in the programme. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection can only grant the number of visas allocated by the Government in the annual migration programme and so must prioritise the order in which skilled migration applications are processed through priority processing arrangements. Priority processing arrangements ensure that the economy gets the skills it needs now, rather than those of visa applicants who applied first.
The Government is aware that priority processing impacts on many applicants who will have a longer wait for their visas to be processed. However, the Government must also take into account the effect of the difficult labour market conditions which migrants, Australian permanent residents and citizens currently face. Priority Group 5 applications are allocated when all available applications in higher priority groups are allocated, or in line with planning level requirements for each of the visa categories.
The Department is unable to give specific timeframes for when individual applications will be finalised, as this will depend on when the person applied and how many applications are received in higher priority groups. It is not possible to process applications outside of the priority processing arrangements. Applicants will only be contacted once their application is allocated to a case officer.
Information on priority processing and allocation dates is available on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website at:www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/estimated-allocation-times.htm.
Regards.

Hi Guest 1234,
I'm sure some of us are better off than you are as you say.
But the uncertainty itself is very unpleasant and more so reading about the stress some people feel, like yourself, is frustrating even though it may not be our own. I hope it works out well on time for yourself first and for people like you.
On that note, is there anywhere we can find how many were aloocated PR in the year 2013-2014? That way it'll give us an idea on how many will get it in the next allocation. From some information shared earlier, i think about 4055 were mean to get it in the 2012-2013 year. Then it would appear we have may be 2-3 years to go? I am very patient too but this is heights though.
I wish each one us a speedy success!

Let's pray for everyone who suffering from this immigration mess and who doing any kind of job to feed theirs family. Hopefully you understand .
Thanks
Harry,
My first comment on this thread seems to have offended you. If that is the case, I truly apologize. I'm on this thread to share and support. Not to offend anyone. My best friend drives a cab too. Never once have I said it's not a respectable job and neither have I claimed that Cab driving profession does not pay their taxes. I have waited tables and worked in a Cafe too before getting out of Uni. and your suffering isn't any less. All of us are on the same boat. Waiting and frustrated.
My reference to not driving cab is to state, without presuming anything about anyone else, that I have tried to stick to area of work I applied through. And again, as far as rights are concerned, it's a free world. If I had to make a sniggering remark about anyone here, I am not an idiot to constantly comment with my real name on it. We're only trying to see if we can come up with something together. And if something came out of this interaction that we have - you, me and everyone else, it'd be the best thing.
Have you signed the petition yet?
The reply from DIBP in the begining explaining the delay for Priority 5,stating that 'Australia runs a demand driven skilled migration program to meet the current & emerging skill needs of the Australian labour market ---' does not apply with the way immigration is working right now.
1- Australia needs Engineers ,Doctors and other professionals so those who pass out with these degrees get the PR -BUT are these students working in those fields?
How can an Engineer who completed his degreet in 2014,and working as a salesman in a supermarket (coz he cannot get a job as an Engineer),meet the needs of the Australian labour market for Engineers? There is no logic behind this!
--- there is no verification of the work experience certificates they bring back from their home countries,if it was verified many would have gone back or been in PRIORITYLIST 5 waiting like us.
---An Engineer can work as a salesman because of the DEMAND FOR ENGINEERS,but a student from Marketing or Management has to wait because there is no demand for Marketing?Am I to conclude that Sales is associated with Engineering and not Marketing?
I would like to ask the authorities what an Australian court's verdict would be if I conducted business where I put the "SALE" sign in the stores and then charge the customer full rate because my manager changed the 'SIGN BOARD 'while the customer was paying for it.Would it be okay if I said that "business was low so to increase the profit of the stores the manager had to do it.
No Professionals will get a job directly in their field so why the STEPMOTHERLY ATTITUDE towards the PRIORITY 5? There's only one logic conclusion which is -that the others have contributed to the economy by doing a degree that brought more dollars to Australia and to add to it they even paid more towards the application fees for migration.Even going by that theory people who have stayed and worked for 5yrs and above have contributed more than the freshers.
It's high time the authorities showed some consideration towards Priority5,the least they can do is to grant PR to those who have a job and waited for over 3yrs,it would be some sort of consolation. How can the next set of applicants trust your system if you keep changing your rules like people change their linen.
How can DIBP assess people and then keep them waiting for 5 years ?Isn't there anything called accountability? How can you just take the fees and then sit on it saying there's no demand?
Hi all,
I totally agree with you all. I have been waiting since December 2009, still not a single message. I contacted a lawyer and the only way to fight this is to lodged a case to the Federal court for unreasonable delay and for this, it will cost roughly $15-20k. I don't think I can afford that. The chance to win is 50-50.
I have already signed the petition. Can someone give us an update?
The demand driven skilled migration program is an excuse... It all started when the former Immigration Minister Chris Bowen brought this policy on board more than 5 years ago. All what DIBP wants is us to withdraw these applications as they thing these applicants are not genuine! This is unfortunately carried out by the new government too. They forgot about us, about the contributions we made to the Australian society, they did not bother to even look whether we work in the field...etc. The new Minister is busy fighting a bunch of boat arrivals. I thought he would stand by the people who arrived legally to this country... but... no use. The minister is covered by a legislation to be the only person to lift the bar or to commence the allocation. Going to the court will take long time and will require $$$$. Again, like I said in my previous comments, WE NEED A STRONG ADVOCACY. Advocacy that will convince the minister that we deserve an answer or outcome, I don't care if it will be yes or no anymore but we need an answer...
For those who are thinking of applying for a spouse visa, the fee will increase by 50%.... If you apply while on Bridging Visa, you will be given Bridging Visa C with no work right!! Seems the government did not have enough milking people and driving others mad...
Any news from anyone??? I bet no. Everyone seems to have given up and happy with the wait!!!!
I'm getting frustrated! Angry! And want to punch myself for going for this visa in the first place! 24 months my foot was the service standard! Need to wiggle out and create more noise. I'm up to take this to court as well. If there's even 15/20 of us, it'll be 1k per head!
As if going to the court will help!!!whom do the courts belong to?When people become aware of the fact that other countries are much cheaper they will think twice about sending to Ausralia. When they know the truth they won't enroll in the universities here and then there will be enough visas for 886.Having said that I would again like to say this-please do not play into their hands and do not say the wrong things whether you are angry or frustrated-stick to the truth. No court in the world can punish you for telling the truth about your situation.Do not pay the agents unless you get the Visa or else even they will give up on your case. This is their livelihood too. It's so hypocritical when people sympathise with other nationals about things happening in other countries and they can't empathize with what's happening on their own soil. It's like saying,"I love my motherland and I can do anything for it but I don't have time to care of my mother"
Seasons Greetings to all of you reading this,I hope with the new year someone in DIBP grows a conscience and help us out of this mess, meanwhile stay focussed and controlled!!!!!
Most of us have unfortunately already paid at the time of visa application, which was years ago
I feel my blood boil every time I think about my Visa.
FYI - Saw in the news yesterday Tony Abbott did a pre-Xmas cabinet reshuffle - Scott Morrison to another ministry within and the incoming Immigration Minister will be Peter Dutton.
I am also depressed about this 886 visa. I applied last Nov.2009 and til now it's not been looking after by anyone in the immigration.
To the immigration,
Please make things fair for us. We did all our best to apply for this visa. We did not do anything illegal. if you think we are the least needed in your country that's fine we can wait but can you
Atleast please allow us to bring our family to be with us. Keeping them away from us will cause every family broken. Please hear us to.
I know the frustration and I cry daily for applying for this visa.It would have helped so much if we were refused straight away. There are so many lives involved around one single visa,so many families suffering for no fault of their own. With due respect to the refugees but even they have more hope than the Category 5.There's one lesson everyone has to learn from this and that is laws and policies can change at anytime without any consideration for the people who have contributed to the economy.Imagine taking a loan for your studies, getting a PHd scholarship and then reduced to the status of a Refugee because the government suddenly felt that certain jobs wouldn't be in demand and which is practically still in demand if you go by the websites of Indeed, seek, careerone and other such sites.Where is the conscience of these lawmakers ? It's like a joke when they volunteer to help other people and have no feelings for the ones suffering on their soil.it's like shedding crocodile tears!!!!!!
We find it hard to believe that you are ready to help your neighbour and not your own son.You need to keep your part of the bargain too--we are not asking for anything illegal, stand by your word.
Clearly someone somewhere has messed up the whole system.
I hope the new minister has a change of heart ,sees things in a practical way and empathizes with us
Hi Hun,
You did not upset me and no offence taken anywhere. We are both just stating our side of the story and sharing experiences.
I feel that I am quite a patient person and I only started to get frustrated with the current issues I am facing. Just like you said, no one in immigration wants to get involve or help. Or if anyone else is willing to get involved or help, they are not able to actually change anything. I appreciate all their effort in trying to get a positive outcome for all of us here.
Anger isn't affecting my inner health. I would say that confusion is probably affecting my inner health more. I have been going through it many times in my head to find the best solution for myself. Hopefully I come to a decision soon or a better solution presents itself.
