Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers.
Migration Alliance queried the status of Priority Group 5 applications last week. The DIBP have responded as follows:
Dear Ms Allan, XXXXXXX [name removed for privacy reasons] passed your e-mail to the Skilled Migration Policy branch as the issues raised by your members are handled in this branch.
As you would appreciate, Australia runs a demand driven skilled migration program to meet the current and emerging skill needs of the Australian labour market and to strengthen the whole economy. Skilled migration policies are tailored to meet this objective and have always changed to reflect the prevailing economic conditions of the time.
I note the frustration expressed by some migration agents at the length of time taken to process skilled migration visa applications. The Australian Government understands that migration is a major life decision and can be emotionally and financially stressful for applicants.
Australia is fortunate in that the number of people seeking skilled migration far exceeds the number of places available in the programme. The Department of Immigration and Border Protection can only grant the number of visas allocated by the Government in the annual migration programme and so must prioritise the order in which skilled migration applications are processed through priority processing arrangements. Priority processing arrangements ensure that the economy gets the skills it needs now, rather than those of visa applicants who applied first.
The Government is aware that priority processing impacts on many applicants who will have a longer wait for their visas to be processed. However, the Government must also take into account the effect of the difficult labour market conditions which migrants, Australian permanent residents and citizens currently face. Priority Group 5 applications are allocated when all available applications in higher priority groups are allocated, or in line with planning level requirements for each of the visa categories.
The Department is unable to give specific timeframes for when individual applications will be finalised, as this will depend on when the person applied and how many applications are received in higher priority groups. It is not possible to process applications outside of the priority processing arrangements. Applicants will only be contacted once their application is allocated to a case officer.
Information on priority processing and allocation dates is available on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website at:www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/estimated-allocation-times.htm.
Regards.

We may not get any immediate relief but if we're all on the same page, when time comes, we can all stand united and dis-integrate this outrageous phantom-type behavior from DIBP.
Hello Gary this is great idea if we together do one silent protest in front of DIAC office at Sydney .. This way can attract to media and other politician .. Today is only one way if we want easy and quick justice then we need help media .. Today we know that media can become man hero to zero... So try to push media source then we can reach our voice. Thanks
Everyone, I wrote to the DIBP and here is their response:
Dear Ms Allan
Thank you for your email concerning the processing of Priority Group 5 visas under the Skilled Migration Programme. Your email has been referred to me for response.
As you may be aware, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection prioritises the order in which visa applications are processed under ministerial direction. Departmental officers are only able to grant the number of visas allocated in the annual migration programme set by government.
Priority Group 5 applications are allocated when all available applications in higher priority groups are allocated, or in line with planning level requirements for each of the visa categories. This may mean that applications in certain visa categories are allocated ahead of others. Further information about priority processing is available on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website at:
www.immi.gov.au/media/fact-sheets/24apriority_skilled.htm
The department appreciates that applicants who are waiting for a decision on their case may be anxious about the time taken to process their application. However, Australia’s skilled migration programme exists to ensure that Australia receives the skills and attributes required in the medium-to-long term. As such, priority is given to those applicants who can best meet these requirements.
Information updates on allocation dates for Priority Group 5 visas are available on the department’s website at:
www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/processing-srs.html
www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/gsm-priority5-processing.htm
Thank you for writing on this matter.
Kind regards
Assistant Director
Human Capital Policy Section
Department of Immigration and Border Protection
Thank you for taking time to share this email with us Liana. very very grateful, irrespective of the content.
I think the Asst. Director of Human Capital Policy Section, Department of Immigration and Border Protection has re-affirmed what some of us actually believe in, we're a joke to them.
However, not to mention they enjoy the revenue in tax paid by us. 10361 bridgers, multiply that by even just $10,000 per person in tax for every financial year. Thats a big fat figure, and WE PAY THAT! Are we not contributing?
And everybody,
The above response only re-affirms where we stand. We need to get our acts together, involve media, involve whoever it takes even if it takes god! This year is dedicated to this cause. And hopefully by next year, some of us will be sane enough to still chase it.
I would not expect any other response from DIBP but thanks Liana for your time and support.
This the most hopeless İmmigration system I v ever seen. It does not even happen in 3. world countries.
The key person is the minister or his assistant. They must notice our frustration and their act of unfairness. Therefore, lets all not let these kind of emails make us give up... We will continue to fight for our rights.
I m also in for Sydney group protest but if we can come together as a big group otherwise there is no point it will be just waste of time.
I was also thinking, everyone, let's write to the minister request him to commence allocations. His staff members will respond to us with similar response to DIBP. We will reply and write again! They have to respond to the email. Every time they respond, we will write back again and again until we fill their inbox. Provided that the emails will be appropriate and polite. This should draw some attention. What do you guys think?!!
I m so angry, I m gonna try everything possible to get this done this year.
Dear Liana,
Thanks a lot for your time and for sharing this with us. It is with extreme sadness and anger that I read the Immigration response. It is outrageous hearing that story over and over again considering that the majority of us have been waiting an UNREASONABLE period of time 6 -7 even 8 years of people's lives!!! We won't stop fighting and certainly after all those years we won't just go away and give up. They are hoping for us to just quit but that won't happen!
thanks agin regards
It could be a long shot but it's would be great idea to tweet the Indian pm narendra Modi. Letting him know about the frustration Indian immigrants have to face in Australia and the way the govt is dealing with us. I am not tweeter savvy but those who are should do it. I will get a tweeter account and do it over the weekend.
PLS ALL join this facebook group we need to congregate all people in our situation in 1 place so that we can communicate real time! Pls share with anyone you know, I will post updates on my effort to reach the media there. I have a phone meeting with a journalist and researcher on Wednesday and he will provide some useful suggestions.
