This week, the Department of Home Affairs released its Annual Report for recent financial year.  Migration Alliance brings you a summary of Report. 

The detailed 288-page report discusses the main functions of Home Affairs which is made up of six branches employing just under 15,000 staff:

  • The Australian Border Force
  • The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre
  • The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation
  • The Australian Federal Police
  • The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission

The report indicates the following interesting statics relating to immigration. Of the 32,414 illegal maritime arrivals that were in Australia with unresolved status after the implementation of Operation Sovereign Borders in September 2013, 65 per cent of applications (21,076 cases) had been decided as at the end of 2017-18 financial year.

This is the annual report from the Secretary of the Department of Home Affairs and the Commissioner of the Australian Border Force (ABF) to the Minister for Home Affairs for the financial year ended 30 June 2018.

It is the first annual report published since the Department’s establishment on 20 December 2017.

The report covers the performance of the Department of Home Affairs and the ABF, which is established within the Department of Home Affairs for budgetary, employment and administrative purposes, but is operationally independent.

Migration Agents might want to be aware of this first reading which was put to the Senate yesterday by Senator Anning.  I am not sure if this has hit main stream media yet, but to me this seems nothing short of a xenophobic, racist, bigoted move!  Here it is and below is the extract from Hansard:

The first visa has been issued under the government’s new Global Talent Scheme, a quarter of the way into the 12-month pilot program. Queensland-based tech scale-up SafetyCulture recently received a visa for a product manager from the US in what is believed to be the first issued under the new scheme.

But concerns still surround the startup stream of the scheme, with one immigration lawyer saying the current format is “absolutely nonsensical” and “is going to fail”.

The Global Talent Scheme was launched in July after being announced to placate a tech sector that had been left shocked and outraged after the axing of the popular 457 visa scheme.
