MIGRATION ALLIANCE HAS DONE IT!!!  WOOOHOOO!!!!

Media Release: Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash
05/12/2013 - 02:26 PM

Red Tape Reduction for Migration Agents

The Coalition Government's commitment to red tape reduction was highlighted today with the announcement by the Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash that re-registration of migration agents would be simplified.

Minister Cash has announced the removal of the English language proficiency requirement for re-registering migration agents.

Under the former Labor Government, the change affecting the re-registration of migration agents was due to come into effect from 1 January 2014.

Minister Cash said simplifying the re-registration process will save the sector time and money.

This decision reflects the Government's commitment to reducing red tape and will allow the migration advice industry to focus on providing high quality assistance to clients.

Minister Cash said she was not satisfied that the former Government's decision to impose an additional burden on re-registering agents by requiring them to demonstrate their English language competency was supported by evidence.

"It is clear from my consultations that industry stakeholders were concerned by the detrimental impact this measure would have had on experienced agents," Minister Cash said.

Minister Cash also stated that she would now consider a broader review of the migration advice industry including English language requirement for migration agents entering the profession.

"Given the role played by the migration advice industry in the delivery of Australia's migration programme, it is important it maintains high standards and continues to develop professionally," Minister Cash said.

BIG thanks and stars to Liana and Chris for your tenacity on the issue. Highest appreciation to what you both have done. Your mindset and attitudes that other industries should have learnt as well if we were to trade successfully in the 21st century onward.

Great job, thank you very much.

MIA was just asking for more exemptions, however MA was fighting to remove the requirements.

MA is a real representative for all RMAs.

I will not renew MIA membership next year.

Thank you very much Liana!!! I think most people in the profession are really pleased with the outcome. Great work! I really appreciate everything you have done for our agents and I feel we are so lucky and honored to have people like you and Chris in this profession who always speak up for us and fight for our rights!

I was paying MIA like $500 a year (what for?) and they did this to me (and many other fellow members). Shame on them and those "experts" who compiled (actually made up) a report recommending this requirement, on ridiculous ground. Justice and common sense prevail. Well done Liana, Chris and MA! I know you guys have kept your faith and put a lot of effort into it.

    Hi Liana,

I join my fellow RMAs to congratulate you and the MA leadership team. Without you this impost would not have been reversed. Shame on MIA!
