Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers.
Migration Alliance members might be interested in the news today in the Sydney Morning Herald where Mayor of London, Boris Johnson says:
'It is time for Britain and Australia to set up a bilateral free labour mobility zone.'
The issue that Johnson sees is that world growth has taken place everywhere else but not especially so in Britain. Now Britain is looking at Australia, which Britain snubbed back in 1973 and seeing our growth. I dare say Britain is a little jealous!
Johnson thinks that Britain needs to stop focussing on Europe and the EU and instead create and grow relationships with countries such as Australia that are going to grow in the years to come. Countries such as Australia offer great opportunities for British people, goods, services etc.
Johnson says:
'This is not just a phenomenally beautiful and relatively underpopulated country with stupendous natural resources. By fluke of history it happens to be intimately cognate with Britain.'
Britain has more in common with Australians than any other country, be it humour, TV shows and language.
Johnson speaks of Australia in 1999 Australians voting to stay part of the Commonwealth and retain the Queen as the head of state.
Johnson talks of 'undoing the damage of 1973' and giving Australians the same privileges as French or other EU citizens trying to find work or working in in the UK. They don't need sponsorship or work permits to do so.
In the article the mayor suggests a bilateral free labour mobility zone.
It seems that the EU is no longer the bees knees.
