Global Talent Scheme (GTS) is a pilot program launched on 1 July 2018 by the Department of Home Affairs. The scheme will run for approximately 12 months and if successful, full implementation is expected by June 2019.

Briefly, GTS is part of the longer term strategy by the Australian Government to attract talent, the world’s best and brightest. In March 2018, the Government announced 2 pilot schemes targeted at supporting talent and innovation in Australia. These schemes are the Global Talent Scheme and Supporting Innovation in South Australia. Together, these aim to support business growth, skills transfer and job creation by attracting highly-skilled global talent to help foster innovative businesses in Australia.

Do miracles, or at least unexpected outcomes, ever happen in migration cases? 

Is it worth pursuing an application for judicial review even where it might seem at first blush that the Minister might have an “open and shut” case? 

Is the Genuine Temporary Entrant criterion for the grant of student visas an insurmountable obstacle?

Highly skilled workers from around the world will have a new visa pathway into Australia as a part of the Government's new Global Talent Scheme pilot program.

From 1 July all businesses will be able to sponsor highly skilled and specialised workers who will help to grow their businesses and create more jobs.

The pilot will run for 12 months and provide businesses with a streamlined process to sponsor overseas workers with cutting edge skills, where there are no suitable Australians available to fill the vacancies.
