The total permanent migration program outcome for 2017-18 was 162,417 places.

The program includes a set of programs managed within a ceiling, as well as the Child program which is demand driven and does not have a ceiling.

- The breakdown for those programs within the migration program, under the ceiling, was as follows:

  • 111,099 places were delivered in the Skill stream;
  • 47,732 places were delivered in the Family stream; and
  • 236 places were delivered in the Special Eligibility stream.

- The outcome of Child visas for the year was 3350 places.

This outcome is consistent with the planning ceiling of 190,000 places set through the Government's budget process - with this figure a ceiling, not a target.

The Migration Amendment (Strengthening the Character Test) Bill 2018 (the Bill) amends the Migration Act 1958 (the Migration Act) to provide grounds for non-citizens who commit serious offences, and who pose a risk to the safety of the Australian community, to be appropriately considered for visa refusal or cancellation.

Specifically, the provisions of the Bill:

 amend the character test in section 501 of the Migration Act 1958 to provide grounds to consider visa cancellation or refusal where the non-citizen has been convicted of a serious crime.

This week, the Department of Home Affairs released its Annual Report for recent financial year.  Migration Alliance brings you a summary of Report. 

The detailed 288-page report discusses the main functions of Home Affairs which is made up of six branches employing just under 15,000 staff:

  • The Australian Border Force
  • The Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre
  • The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation
  • The Australian Federal Police
  • The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission

The report indicates the following interesting statics relating to immigration. Of the 32,414 illegal maritime arrivals that were in Australia with unresolved status after the implementation of Operation Sovereign Borders in September 2013, 65 per cent of applications (21,076 cases) had been decided as at the end of 2017-18 financial year.
