Office of the MARA stops issuing RMAs with registration certificates and cards

The following message has been received by RMAs from the Office of the MARA originating from email address, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. :

Dear Registered Migration Agent,

From today the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (the OMARA) will stop issuing registration certificates and cards to registered migration agents.
The OMARA is required by law to ensure that the Register of Migration Agents (the Register) shows all persons who are currently registered and their contact details. The electronic version of the Register provides accurate, secure and real-time information, reflecting any changes that may have occurred since the person was registered. Agent registration certificates and cards do not provide this level of accuracy or security and as such are being discontinued. This shift is also in alignment with the department’s digital transformation strategy.
The OMARA’s long standing practice has been to direct consumers to the Register on the OMARA website to find, or to verify that they are using, a registered migration agent. Studies have shown that users of government services in Australia are increasingly choosing to engage government services through digital channels. With the advent of more widespread use of portable devices, consumers are able to search the Register at any time or place.
The OMARA understands that some agents produce their card or certificate when attending departmental offices. We have been in contact with all visa processing areas, airports, and detention centres to advise that verification that a person is an RMA is via the Register on the OMARA website. If you are accessing departmental premises (for example a detention centre) security staff will continue to ask you to provide photographic identification.
If you have not already given permission to display your photograph on the Register we encourage you to do so now. This adds an extra layer of security for your MARN. Consumers are then able to see that you are the registered migration agent they have agreed to engage. You can update your photo and preferences by logging in to the OMARA website.

Regards
Office of the MARA

Note: It will not be possible to issue any further cards to agents even if a card has been requested. The option to request a card will be removed from the online registration application form around July. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

Then stop charging us hefty money too to register us :(

Not only the coat of arms disappeared from the certificate, the certificate itself has now disappeared. It doesn't sound right. I believe Law Societies will never abolish practicing certificates in hard copies. Is MA taking any action with regard to this sudden announcement ?

How can MARA make such an arbitrary decision with absolutely no consultation with Agents?

I hope that the two industry bodies will both take swift and strong action to make representation to both MARA and Immigration on behalf of Agents.

This will make it even more difficult for consumers to differentiate between a Registered Migration Agent and unlawful operators.

There had been a condition that agents are obliged to show their registration certificates in a prominent place within their office. In our office, 4 agents' certificates are framed and placed side by side on the front reception wall. These look so professional. From next renewal, we should perhaps replace these certificates with print outs from MARA agents search pages. What a joke.

The goal is to see all agents to disappear completely I suppose, they never happy the existence of migration agents.

We should at least be able to have the option to print a digital certificate for our offices.
Seriously!! What do we get for our money???

    Surely this is unacceptable.

I agree with you. They should keep the option open for us to print a digital certificate by ourselves. Saving their cost and manpower=Reduction in the rego fee.
It seems that MIA is discussing this matter with the MARA, hope they will reverse this ridiculous decision.

This will encourage unregistered agents to expand and promote their businesse. Registered agents are burden on OMARA beacuse of code of conduct etc - but unregistered agents are out of their reach - so no burden. Good work !

Law Socities still issue hard copy Practicing Certificates for us to display in a public place for all to see. If the particular Solicitor was disbarred, it incumbent on the Society to ensure they're no longer operating and if they did, then they committed an offence.

With this student drastic change, what would the public think, when they no longer see our MARA Cerrtificates being displayed?

Now MARA RMA's will have to convince members of the public they are registered and they will have to show the public from their computers, their digital evidence.

What then are we paying for?

Feels like RMA credentials are worth nothing. This will create more distrust in the industry (a certificate of registration in an RMA's office can at least be seen by clients to give them some comfort that the agent is indeed registered).
I agree with you Wei. Totally.
Looks like I need to start studying law again, if I want to protect myself and my business. I feel like RMA's are being pushed out of the industry.

Registration without documentary evidence of registration - wow. Doesn't happen with other authorities. Must be an agenda behind this.
If I register as CPA or ICAA etc I will have certificate to verify my registration. I cant understand why they will not issue one, at least the certificate to place in the office.

Additionally the process was underhanded. Migration Agent is a licensed Profession. We need registration and we need to prove it. It is totally unprofessional to direct the applicants to the MARA website to check. The obvious question from the client will be why can't you prove you are a Registered Agent.

Ridiculous! Now what should I put on the wall of my office? probably my New Zealand Migration Advisor certificate instead? At least it would make me still look like a professional.

More Doubt on Customers to belive we are Registered or Not Registered at the first point of contact. We have to go to the website and show them we are Registered. Whats wrong with MARA. We had one Professional Body who is treating us this way. Thanks for Law Society suppoting the Lawyers. A piece of Certificate to display gives a one point of Contact that we are Registered. Where are we now! Common On MA please plead for Digital Certificate considering the hefty Renewal we pay.
