These words have been taken from a speech this morning, 7 August 2018, by the Hon Alan Tudge MP, Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs. The speech was made to the Business Council of Australia in Melbourne. The speech talks about the case for Skilled Migrants, the Global Talent Scheme and the National Recruitment exercise.
"Australia has been built on migration. Successive waves of migrants have come to our shores, help build our economy and made Australia the greatest multicultural nation on earth.
The journey, however, is never complete. We need to continue to work to constantly improve the quality of our skilled migration intake. We need to always ensure that we are selecting the right people and that there are high expectations of integration upon new arrivals and policies to support that.
The Turnbull Government has worked hard on these things and we will continue to do so. Our commitment to the business community is that we will continue to engage with you. And our message to the elite talent around the world is: we want you and invite you to make Australia your home!"

The Migration Program in its current dysfunctional guise is having the exact opposite effect. The elite talent from around the world have choices, as Australia is not the only country vying for the best and brightest. The constantly changing migration program, with its processing time blowouts, inconsistent decisions and massively increased costs, is driving the “best and brightest” away in droves.
What we are left with are the desperate, who will do anything to come to Australia. The Australian business community is under constantly growing strain as skilled roles become progressively difficult to fill due to the Immigration barriers being unreasonably and unrealistically increased.
As an example, the requirements for Accountants have become so unattainable, that few if any genuine, highly experienced overseas Accountants can meet the points requirement for a skilled visa. What we are left with are desperate International Students who can inflate their score with Australian qualifications, Australian Professional year and NAATI accreditation. Yet, these inexperienced international graduates are not what the financial industry require to fill highly skilled roles. As such, the occupation of Accountant continues to be in high demand, despite the many years of high Immigration numbers for this occupation.
