Tips for phoning the Immigration helpline 131881

For all those people thinking about calling 131 881 to speak to someone in a DIBP call centre here are some tips:

PHONE CALL 1

1. Always ask the operator what their name is.  They may only give you a first name.

2. Always as them what their position number is.  They must tell you their position number.

3. Make sure you write their name and position number down.

4. Make sure you write the time of your call.

5. Write down the information that you are being told.

5. Double-check the information that you have been provided by making a second phone call.

PHONE CALL 2

Repeat the steps in PHONE CALL 1 again and check that the operator provides you with exactly the same information as you received in PHONE CALL 1.

If you do not receive the same information both times, assume that the information you are being provided by 131 881 is flawed or inconsistent.

REMEDY IF YOU ARE GETTING DIFFERENT ANSWERS EACH TIME YOU PHONE 131 881

Find then phone or email a Registered Migration Agent.  Registered Migration Agents have proven sound knowledge and insurance for the advice they provide.

You can find a Registered Migration Agent using the search function on this website, or by visiting the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority on www.mara.gov.au

THE VISA APPLICATION ITSELF

It is your life and your visa application to Australia, so make sure you get it right the first time around.

WHY DID WE WRITE THIS?

To protect the consumer and give the consumer (visa applicant) every opportunity to help protect themselves.  People on the 131 881 helpline are not interested in the outcomes of Australian visa applications and are not involved in the decision-making on Australian visa applications.  They are not insured for the advice they provide and have no expert knowledge in Australian immigration law.

INTERESTING WEIRD FACT

The 131 881 call centre staff don't refer callers to the Office of the MARA so that callers   /consumers can speak to a properly trained professional about their case.

Perhaps it is because 131 881 call centre staff don't want their advice second-guessed or proven plain wrong.   It is not understood why the 131 881 call centre staff don't refer callers / consumers to the government website where callers / consumers can find registered professionals who offer proper advice and assistance.

Test the 131 881 number yourself and you will see what we are talking about!

    Hi,
Does immigration department disconnect the call automatically after 04:30 pm (in case you are in queue waiting for your turn on phone)?
If they don't disconnect automatically, then does this mean that they will address the call?

    Hi,
I tried to contact immigration the whole morning but to no avail.
I have been away for the last 11 months, arrived last week and my visa BB155 expires 19 Dec 2017. I am back to renew my visa. Here are my questions:
Now that I am in the country, do I have to renew my visa before the date or can I do it after the expiry date?
What are the procedures to renew, any straightforward website link or App are most welcome.
I heard the immigration law has changed, I appreciate any wise and helpful advice. Thank you

I need some help or direction. I am a permanent Australian resident and have been in the country for 45 years. I came in on my mothers passport from England as an infant and have been here ever since. My parents were granted permanent status in 1974. Issue I have is that I have No Visa, No Passport and Only the original passport I came in on in 1974. I can not find any information to help with getting a ImmiAccount setup as I am not eligible due to not knowing what plane we came in on. Parents are long gone so I have no one to ask. Have tried national archives, Dept of Home Affairs and DDBP keep getting back sorry can't help. were to from here ??? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,

Was wondering if someone on here could please help me? I am a recent graduate of a Nursing Degree. I am currently in the process of applying for a 485 Graduate Work visa. I also have a job offer that starts on February 5th 2018. My student visa 500 expires on the 13th of January and I want to apply before that. Whilst I was going through all the questions on the immigov account, I noticed that I need to have applied for a skills assessment to be able to continue my visa application. So I went on the ANMAC website to apply for my skills assessment, only to realise that they are closed until the 15th of January and not accepting any applications. They are rolling out their paper system to online. This affects me greatly as without a skills assessment application receipt, I cannot apply for my VISA. I am so stressed out. I have until the 13th of January to sort this out.

What should I do? Can someone please help me? If I ring the immigration department, will they be able to waive that requirement for me considering that it is not my fault?

    I will await your responses,
    Nish

Dear Sir . I asked my friend who lives in the United States to write to you. His English is better than me. Now I am writing to you from Finland. Please find a solution to my problem and my Australian mother. She is a big woman and a disabled person. As long as we talk on the phone she sheds tears of longing. I also want to live next to her and I have Finnish nationality. Accept my sincere greetings

Hi, I'll be travelling for aabout 8 months thru Europe,
I have an Australian passport, have been here since 1962. But did some gap years overseas. I'm retired at present, I know I can go for the period I want.
My question is I have a one ticket as I don't know when I'll return, nor from where at the point of return. Are there any problems with this. I do intend to return! Maybe earlier due to my aging mum.

    Hello,
So i recently applied for student visas and student guardian visas on 18th January.

Unfortunately, we still haven’t gotten any response. How can I contact the immigration so i can inform them my university has started and i need to commence as soon as possible.

This is a massive long shot but I don't know where else to ask. I have asked police but with no luck. I was in a sever domestic relationship where the person (my ex partner) was incarcerated for crimes against me, I had been told by his mother and himself that he would be deported back to new Zealand from Australia because of these crimes, after his prison term was completed. My AVO expired the day before his release date on the 12th of April therefor I can't get any further information through police or extend AVO as there was no other incidents as within a year period as he was in prison. I'm fearful of mine and my family's safety, and wondering if there is any way if I can simply find out if he has been deported or not for price of mind.

Message: Hello....My name is Gagandeep Kaur Warring.Actually, I wanna ask about myself that I came in Australia in 2015 on my husbands behalf which was 457 visa and I was allow to do full time work. But after one year we apply for our PR but the issues which were going going in between us was spoiling our relationship.I came in India in last year of January 26th. My husband convinced me to sign on my PR withdrawal file as my father was on the last stage of cancer and he passed away on 4th of April. I signed my PR file because I was so depressed at that time and I trust on my realtionship that's why I signed PR otherwise who wants to get her PR to be spoiled.Even, I gave an application for leave of holidays. But I wasn't even knew that I will not come back. Now, I am so depressed about my life as I never thought of this. Please , give me a solution.

Hey I just noticed on the Home Affairs website that they have a new global call centre that's apparently managed by Datacom so you wont be able to get position numbers from staff.

You can apparently call from anywhere in the world 9am -5pm (local time in the country you're calling from) on +61 2 61960196. Aussie based callers can still ring the 131881 number but they've changed their opening hours to 9am-5pm.
