Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers.
The following is the official press release from the Office of the Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, which has been sent to Migration Alliance:
The successful passage of a Greens’ disallowance motion has overturned the government’s attempts to scrap a range of essential, affordable family and carer visas.
“The Senate has voted to keep families living together and looking after each other in Australia,” the Greens’ immigration spokesperson, Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.
“The success of this disallowance motion means that thousands of Australian families will have a chance to reunite with relatives from around the world.”
The four ‘non-contributory’ visas that had been scrapped were the relatively affordable Age Dependent Relative Visa, Remaining Relative Visa, Carer Visa and the Aged Parent Visa.
“The Abbott government should never have scrapped these essential visas, which only serve to keep families together,” Senator Hanson-Young said.
“The Abbott government was trying to make family reunion the exclusive preserve of the rich, but this disallowance stopped that from happening.”

This is great news but I do not have high hopes of getting any better service from DIBP in relation to these subclasses. Today, I have been trying to ring the DIBP 131881 and the Parent Visa Processing Centre number for the past three hours and I keep getting a recorded message that "ue to the high volume of calls we are unable to take your call, please call back later". I tried the call back service and was told I had an hour long wait. They did call but when I answered I was put on hold and then cut off! Has anyone else had this highly unsatisfactory experience. What on earth is one supposed to do if you have an urgent matter and no direct lines to case officers (as is increasingly the case). My client has died and I have sent several emails to notify this sad event but have not any response from the parent visa team in Adelaide. Her bereaved sponsoring son wants to get a refund of the VAC and retrieve his AOS bond. I will be referring this to the global feedback unit.
Further to my earlier post today, I tried to call global feedback but received a "due to high volume of calls, we are unable to take your call now, please call back later". When I tried to send feedback via the online form, I received a runtime error so could not send that either. This beyond a joke. Can anyone at this department be held to account for this fiasco?
So relieved! My mum can now apply to come out and care for my son who has a severe intellectual disability and cerebral palsy to allow me to continue working as a nurse! !
Thank you so much
