Calls to keep Accountants on SOL

With the Department of Employment stating that there is no shortage of accountants in Australia and calling for accounting to be taken off the Skilled Occupation List for migrants, peak industry bodies and employers alike warn that the shortage will become apparent as the economy picks up.

More new graduates are having a hard time finding work and companies now can afford to be choosy about who to hire, reports The Australian Financial Review.

"Accounting has already been flagged by the Australian Workforce and Productivity Agency, which develops annual advice on the skilled list for DIBP as an occupation now considered a “borderline” inclusion on the list. The agency is doing a special investigation in the supply and demand for accounting skills." says the report.

It’s argued that the link between accountancy and permanent visas has resulted in the number of international graduates finishing undergraduate accounting degrees skyrocketing by 500 per cent between 2001 and 2012.

However the number of Australians studying accounting has fallen 20 per cent since 2001. Peak accounting bodies are thus concerned that if the foreign stream should slow as the Australian economy picks up, a shortage may become apparent.

CPA Australia and the Institute of Chartered Accountants argue that international accounting students are “a critical source of future labour supply” for Australia and that there is a shortage of accountants especially in “regional, rural and remote areas”.

Pitcher Partners HR director Elizabeth Nunez warns that  whilst “Large organisations are not putting on the volume of graduates since the financial crisis” it could change and she is concerned that supply will tighten up again if business confidence lifts and companies start putting on additional resources.

Due to redundancy in OCT 2012 and having applied for over 450 Accounting jobs, without success, I find it difficult to reconcile CPA, IPA and ICAA calls for maintaining the SOL list regarding accountants. I would STRONGLY encourage the relevant body to REMOVE accountants from the list so myself and other Australian accountants could actually feel like their years of study was not a complete waste of time.

I also find it difficult to comprehend how the CPA, IPA and ICAA can continue to insist on the need for professional accountants. I am now two years unemployed and totally unemployable after having to take a redundancy in 2011.

    Dear All,

I request not to flag off Accountancy from Skilled list, because it is one opportunity to get migration to Australia, and accounting courses are wide scope of revenue generated to Australia government.

As said Accounting bodies in Australia is urging to the Dept of immigration not to remove from SOL.

I request the govt. to reconsider the decision, and it is biggest loss to the government and economy by remove Accountancy from SOL.

    Thanks & Regards

Sadly I must agree with the reported statistics by bodies independent of the accountancy profession and those bodies who represent educational institutes, namely CPA Australia, Institute of Chartered Accountants, those spokespeople for universities such as Deakin and International Education Association of Australia. They are theives who have deceived foreign students by creating propoganda that there is a shortage of Accountants. because foreign students make upto 78% of accounting enrolments. It means they will lose more than 1/2 the profit. They make money excuses as the reason why NOT to take Accounting off the skilled migration list. I have cited no other reasons coming from these organisations!
There is, in fact, an oversupply of Accountants as can plainly be seen.
It does not mean you lose the opportunity to become an Australian Resident, simply find an occupation which is in demand and where you can actually find a job. Then everyone is happy.
