The Migration Review Tribunal and Refugee Review Tribunal will cease sending statutory letters by registered post from 16 December 2013. From this date, any statutory letter (such as an invitation to attend a hearing, a letter inviting comment on or response to adverse information, or a decision notification letter) that is sent by post will be sent by standard post.
Registered post will continue to be used to return (to addresses in Australia) original, official documents issued by government agencies.
Unfortunately, with standard mail, we will have no proof that the articles was ever delivered, or even posted. Australia Post is good but they do not provide 100% delivery. I do understand the problems in collecting from the post office though when mail is addressed to an office address. I usually find a business card with name and company address along with a licence will suffice. Off course anyone can print a business card with a computer and printer but at least you get your article.
Noel, I take your point, and there is no foolproof method - MRT sends faxes through as notifications also, and these depend on electronic equipment... perhaps MA can suggest that the MRT/RRT send notifications express post since the are using the Oz Post process - it has a tracking facility like registered post AND it's cheaper, I would think... would certainly support this as a suggestion to the MRT/RRT if MA members feel it would assist.
Cheers
Bea
I welcome this wholeheartedly as there is nothing worse that getting OzPost customer service officers who proceed to tell you they can't give you the letter because the address on the licence (as a means of identification) is different to the address on the letter (even though we say until we are blue in the face that this is our office address....) and even then, they want you to bring EVIDENCE of office address that matches the address on the registered post 'come and pick up your article' slip... Good stuff.
