Not enough Aussies want to work on farms

There is a shortage of skilled help on Australian farms, but getting the Department of Immigration to understand the skill-set sought by farm owners is proving difficult.  The skilled occupations list doesn't seem to be cutting it.

A recent article in The Australian newspaper discusses an onion and carrot grower, Yvonne Smith who sponsored two South Africans to Australia under the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS).  Mrs Smith is still facing issues finding local staff as there are simply not enough Australians that would like to work on farms.

Farmer, Mrs Smith is concerned that the Skilled Migration List does not address the skills shortage on farms. Perhaps we need to go back to the days where there were accessible and easy waivers for occupations in groups lower than 4 on the then ASCO (now ANZSCO) for post-codes in regional and / or rural Australia.

To read more on this please see the article in The Australian.

Special thanks to Alice Nicolas for bringing this article to my attention.

I take deep concern on this new Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash with the heading which reads as : .

Warning about dodgy migration agents - Michaelia Cash - DIBP
Cash has released a press releas...

Is this Assistant Liberal Minister so incompetent and insensitive to those thousands of professional MARA registered Agents that she in unable or unwilling to identify and state explicitly if the AFIS a registered agent or otherwise an offshore scammers. Taken as the whole the press release does not distinguish the difference between registered Migration Agents and bogus impostors.. The use of the term “dodgy migration agents” insinuates all agents as being possible dodgy. I find this offensive and places all agents as on a defensive position. Liana , you must protest at this cheap political point score by the new Liberal government, even though Migration Alliance had lobbied with the new Liberal Government. .

Please publish this Assistant Minister’s email andI we will ask her what is her government doing about entertaining applications from non-registered agents..
