Voting in the MIA elections is not compulsory

Migration Alliance received the following question via email from a joint MIA-MA member:

"I have a quick inquiry regarding the Migration Institute of Australia's Election Notice.

I have received a couple of emails regarding the upcoming election of MIA ballot.

While I understand with other organisations I am a member of these elections are not compulsory, the fact that the MIA's is done in conjunction with the Australian Electoral Commission makes me question it in this case.

Is the MIA's ballot a compulsory one, or if we choose not to vote is this acceptable or subject to any penalty?"

Answer:

Checked with the MIA and the AEC.  Voting is not compulsory.
