Australian Visa could cost AU$50,000 from next year.

$50,000 could soon be the cost of Australian citizenship under radical proposals being reviewed by the Productivity Commission. The government has asked the think tank to investigate a “price-based immigration system” which would effectively grant citizenship to those who are willing to pay the price, according to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald today.

With the budget blowout now estimated at $150 billion over the next four years – which is $50 billion higher than first thought – the government is seriously considering a radical shift away from migration based on skills and family connections to a person’s wealth.

“Such a scheme could help the government rein in the budget deficit by bringing in tens of billions of dollars in extra revenue and allow it to trim the number of public servants administering Australia's immigration system,” notes the report.

The Productivity Commission paper on Australia's migrant intake, released on Friday, raises some dramatic proposals including introducing an immigration lottery and creating a HECS-style payment system for immigrants to pay back their entry fee - those who cannot pay the fee upfront may be allowed to borrow against future expected earnings or by introducing a loans program.

Businesses needing skilled migrants could pay the fee or governments could waive the fee for particular professions or trades, according to the report.

The Productivity Commission will release a draft report in November and hold public hearings before it hands its final report to government next March.

From the "brightest and best" to "short term gain with long term pain"

This is absolutely ridiculous! Apart from raising a one of benefit for the Federal Government (money) what long term benefit does this provide for Australia. You will have elderly retired rich folks paying their way to come to Australia and providing no benefit whatsoever. They will be nothing but a burden on our already crumbling health system. Oh, and what about the wealthy drug lords buying their way to come here and do business. Surely isn't skilled migration the better option, creating jobs and strengthening the economy? But hang on a minute, this is all about filling the government coffers and not providing for long term Australia!!!! This is bad government at its finest with no long term thought at all!!!!

If they got the big companies to pay their taxes like everyone else the country would be in surplus! Ita a good way to encourage Isis / radicals to enter easily. The suiside bombers and armed cafe hold ups take Australian loans for their visas make 1 or 2 re payments then blow the place up. Australia could and I stress the word COULD be actually paying them to hurt them... Negative but possible...

What an interesting strategy. When SkillSelect was introduced Immigration stated that they wanted to attract the "Best and the Brightest" to Australia.

Now that the budget black hole continues to grow it seems that we will settle for those with the deepest pockets.

I don't believe that any Government would seriously consider such a scheme.

Maybe they were influenced by Vanuatu's recent policy in a bid to raise money after after cyclone Pam. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-29/honorary-vanuatu-citizenships-on-sale/6431314

I think this is the best policy. It's gonna help country's economy in two ways. As we gonna get billions of dollar to boost up country's economy...2. We gonna get the potential migrants in australia, who will be skilled and financially mature to help to australian economy

I think this would be a great step for anyone who is willing to pay this amount set by government this will actually boost australian economy and also will help temporary residents who are already in australia for few years but are struggling to get the permanent residency due to highge english language score requirements or some other criterias this step will solve government and immigrant boths but australian temporary residents should also be given an opportunity to pay and get citizenship but safety checks must be done on a serious note especially terrorists and smugglers

It is one step in a better immigration policy, and that is, reduce from 200k a year to 40k a year intake, charge them 50k for a Permanent visa or citizenship, AND they have to over a 3 year period show that they have learned good English, adapted to the local culture, and NOT attempting to assimilate the local culture!, failure means deportation and keep their 50k!. Also, depending on how long they work, depends greatly on how much pension they get, Australia should not be seen as a "retirement village".
