The Australian Treasury estimates that the number of Australians aged 65 and over is expected to increase rapidly, from around 2.5 million in 2002 to 6.2 million in 2042.
That is, from around 13 per cent of the population to around 25 per cent. For Australians aged 85 and over, the growth is even more rapid, from around 300,000 in 2002 to 1.1 million in 2042.
At the same time, growth in the number of people of workforce age is expected to fall from around 1.2 per cent per annum over the last decade to almost zero in forty years' time. In 2002 there were more than five people of working age to support every person aged over 65. By 2042, there will only be 2.5 people of working age supporting each person aged over 65.

Hi my name is Kirsten and I am an Australian who lives in the U.K. I have worked as a caregiver for 25 years on and off ie: in between being a mother also in that time I did an university degree in Fine art. To be quite honest I have always wanted to come home but have l had responsibilities but now I would like to see my country as I left when I was 7. I am 59, healthy and absolutely love cooking/baking and have sold my food to the public also I have made wedding cakes. I would also hope that we would become friends aswell as a business relationship but I would be quite committed but would have to occasionally come back to the u.k to see my children. I would not be able start until June as I would have to sort my affairs etc... also I hesitate to mention I have two small Yorkshire terriers who I adore and would love to come with me ....kind regards Kirsten
