Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers.
There are two updates today for Migration Alliance members, the first about skills assessments and the second about Manus Island:
1. ENS skills assessment changes - the DIAC have released changes to acceptable skills assessments on their website (from 28 October 2013). To read more please click here.
Changes to Acceptable Skills Assessments for Employer Nomination Scheme and Regional Skilled Migration Scheme visas – 28 October 2013
From 28 October 2013 skills assessments obtained for a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa will no longer be accepted when you apply for a Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa or a Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) visa.
If you applied for an Employer Nomination Scheme or a Regional Skilled Migration Scheme visa before 28 October 2013, and your application is yet to be decided by the department, this change will not apply to you.
2. Incident on Manus Island involving Papua New Guinea agencies - update from Scott Morrison, Immigration Minister - the incident was between police and military personnel and people were seen carrying rocks and sticks
Hi guys,
A quick question that I can’t get a good answer to. Reading the changes that would imply that a provisional skill assessment is sufficient currently for an ENS, and reading the PAMS, it doesn’t distinguish between them. I ask, because we accidently lodged one with a provisional and were about to pull it, but are now wondering if there is a chance.
Cheers,

The SLI 2013 No. 233 Regulations as made ... this regulation amends the Migration Regulations 1994 to put beyond doubt that assessments of the applicant’s skills for a skilled visa may be applicable only to the visa applied for.

Hi Liana,
Thanks for the news article.
It appears that from 28 Oct 13, skills assessments obtained for a Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa will no longer be accepted when you apply for a Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186).
I always thought ENS applications require a permanent skills assessment (instead of 485 skills assessment). So with this news, it appears DIAC has always accepted 485 skills assessment for ENS applications?!
Do you have experience with this? Did you know anyone submitted an ENS application with an old 485 skills assessment and get approved?
Many thanks for the discussion.

There is a need for a fairer points allocation system
English Language Points allocation
20 Points Score 8 in each band
15 point An overall score of 8
10 Points Score 7 in each band
10 point An overall score of 7
We need to also remove the IELTS legislative monopoly with other accredited English assessments made acceptable
