Federal Court's Response to the COVID-19 outbreak

This information supersedes all previous updates provided by the Court.

In light of the recent developments that led to the closure of the Lionel Bowen building in Sydney, the Federal Court of Australia is taking steps to reduce the risk to court users and court staff from in person attendance in court buildings, commencing Wednesday, 18 March 2020.

Unless specifically and individually excepted by the Court, all Federal Court of Australia listings that require in person attendance, including mediations and listings relying on video link from court premises listed up to 30 June 2020, are vacated. The Court is examining, as a matter of urgency, its capability to facilitate listings by remote access technology, without requiring in person attendance. Further information will be provided as soon as possible of alternative arrangements that may be able to be put in place.

VETASSESS offshore assessments cancelled

Please be advised that, in line with Commonwealth Government guidelines around the coronavirus (COVID-19), VETASSESS has decided to cancel all offshore assessments effective immediately.
Assessments for professional occupations are not affected by this, but it will affect these planned offshore assessments for trades:

South Africa (27th March to 5th April, 2020) – Electrical, Air Conditioning Refrigeration Mechanic and Plumbing (General).
Philippines (27 April - 1 May, 2020) - Automotive and Engineering Trades, Mechanical Engineering.
United Kingdom (13 - 14 May, 2020) - Electrician (General), Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic.
India (19 - 22 May, 2020) Electrician (General).

We have advised Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) and we will contact the affected applicants who were planning to attend a VETASSESS offshore assessment venue immediately.
We will continue to conduct technical Interviews for applicants via online facilities (Adobe Connect).
We continue to monitor the situation regarding COVID-19 and will advise TRA when offshore assessments can resume.

Australian government imposes compulsory self-isolation from 11:59PM on 15 March 2020

A significant step-up to Australia’s national response to the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has been endorsed by the National Cabinet, comprising the Prime Minister, State Premiers and Territory Chief Ministers.

Based on the advice of the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC), the National Cabinet agreed that our core objective now is to slow the outbreak of COVID-19 in Australia by taking additional steps to reduce community transmission.

We must ensure our health system can care for the most vulnerable, in particular the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions.

Legal Training Australia suspends all face-to-face CPD for Registered Migration Agents and takes training online

From Monday the 16th March 2020, the largest CPD provider in the Registered Migration Agent profession, Legal Training Australia, will suspend all face-to-face CPD events to prevent the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).

In an email today, Saturday the 14th March, the Director, Liana Allan stated that all 10 point blitzes will now be run online.

Legal Training Australia also stated it has put on more online CPD webinars to cater for the increase in demand for online classes. "Pay-after-you-pass" distance learning CPD is also stated as an option for Registered Migration Agents.

Important Decision On Partner Visas From Full Court!!
