LegendCOM is still better than LexisNexis

As far back as May 2014 we covered a story on the best 'professional library' service for Migration Agents.

We are prompted to give our opinion on which professional library service we still think is best and most reliable for RMAs in 2020.   An email came in yesterday from a RMA, which has caused us to write another article on LexisNexis v LegendCOM professional library for RMAs

The email describes a situation where, with LexisNexis,  RMAs are sent the bill for the next subscription just prior to the subscription end date.  If the RMA doesn't want to renew, its too late.  Apparently, under the terms of the LexisNexis contract, an RMA should have given 90 days notice BEFORE the end of the contract year that they were not going to renew their LexisNexis subscription.  So, RMAs are effectively forced to pay for the coming year even though they advise LexisNexis prior to the expiry date, that you they do not want to renew.

We don't believe many agents would be aware of the small print in the LexisNexis contract or be aware of this.

The winner for the most reliable service is still the DIBP's own government product, in our opinion is still LegendCOM.   It's also less expensive and more functional.  They also provide free training from time to time and a free help desk.  LegendCOM is produced on a cost-recovery basis only.

A previous story on why we prefer the Australian Government's professional library, LegendCOM is located here.

Legend V LexisNexis. I think it is a case of preferring the system you use. As a user of LexiNexi I know full well the work flow frustration with the lack of hyperlinks to legislative instruments. I complained for the first 2 years of use. The response was to creating a link to frequently used legislative instruments. And then I worked out how to use the search function. LN have a page of every LIN going back over the years. Legislative Instruments used in Schedule 1 and 2 can be searched using Sch 1 and 2 item numbers. But still it seems clumsy compared to the efficiency of Legend links.

It is the Practical Guidance that is the advantage of LexisNexis. All visa subclasses have professionally written guidance for RMAs. This includes Sch 1 and 2 hyperlinks and explanations of concepts and requirements pertaining to the specific visa subclass. For instance if you click on the parent visa link the 2 stage processing of the contributory parent visa is explained, time of application and time of decision requirements are listed, the balance of the family test is reiterated, the sliding scale to determine when women qualify for the aged pension is presented, and invaluable practice 'tips' are identified. The practical guidance greatly assists work flow. Compared to LexisNexis Legend is a bare bones operation. I remember many questions on Facebook forums that were readily answerable by LN Practical Guidance.

I think it is a matter of opinion that Legend is more reliable than LN. I pay around $780 a year for LexisNexis so I am not sure that Legend is a cheaper option.
