The Administrative Appeals Tribunal released their Migration Caseload Summary for July-May by visa subclass.
For this period there were approximately 16 700 lodgements for an appeal. The overwhelming bulk of applications are to appeal student visa refusals with approximately 3,800 lodgements. Second in line are partner visas with approximately 3700 lodgements for appeal followed by sponsorship/nomination refusals sitting at 1750.
There were approximately 4622 appeals lodged for refugee visas with Malaysian nationals making up almost 50% of the caseload.
In most cases applicants have 21 days to submit their appeal from the date of the refusal.

Good on you angry agent. The same should apply to the sponsorships of second-hand wives from PRC. A four year wait instead of a two year one as is at present will sort these visa hunters out. The number of "suddenly divorced after two years" clients seeking advice on citizenship are shown the door while on the meantime getting welfare from centrelink. Makes me angry
The Malaysian refused protection visas are most likely not genuine. I am unsure why the applicant can't be refused quickly and appeals likewise? Most of these types of applicants will most likely not have the required evidence to prove their protection entitlement.
I had a Malaysian tourist who asked me once, if I knew about a 2 year bridging visa that provided work rights. I indicated there was no such thing and asked what specific visa did his friend apply for. He mentioned that it was a protection visa and even provided a strategy on how to drag out the process of prolonging an appeal after the visa was refused.
I think there should be penalties for applicants abusing this pathway and if severe consequences are the result (at least a 12 month ban from applying for any further visas to Australia along with an added fine) of fraudulent applications, it will discourage future applicants from abusing this loop hole.
