The Indian Telegraph's Racial Discrimination Forum

Migration Alliance members may be interested in the following event being held by the Indian Telegraph:

This invite is a reminder for those who are yet to register. We urge that you register ASAP to avoid missing out. Changes to the Racial Discrimination Act will have a direct impact on you and your family. The repercussions will last for generations to come.

United we stand.

Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act makes it an offence to offend, vilify, insult, humiliate or intimidate anyone based on their race, colour, national or ethnic origin.

Section 18D allows freedom of speech, speaking or making references on race (also colour, national or ethnic origin) in debate, public audience or even artistic work/performances (play, theatre, musicals etc), which has been done in good faith and hence does not render unlawful.

Implications on change of law

We are all aware of the recent racist taunt by a woman on a train towards an Asian lady and another lady with two young kids. See the link

This incident took place with the existing law still in place with the community of every colour in uproar of this misbehaviour and indecency.

Imagine the day when this type of behaviour will be deemed acceptable by law when the current RDA is repealed.

Topic: Proposed changes to the Racial Discrimination Act

Date and Time: Thursday 24th July, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

Venue: Marayong Community Centre, Cnr. Quakers Rd and Railway Rd

Did they call any barrister to explain the changes in law? If not I will not like to join as I do not think I am an idiot.

Many ethical communities use the word racism too often because they are not happy if they do not get the job they applied for or if they do not have their way. I am migrant and I have learned to live in this country and I have not had experience of this sort against me in all my employments or social life for the past 16 years. If a person thinks someone is racially discriminating they will go above and beyond to prove their point and to justify their failure at any level.
I had one person applying for a job in my business telling me that I did not employ him because he is wearing a turban. I immediately replied that I have many people of his ethnicity working (and I had 4 staff from his ethnicity at the time working without any issues whatsoever) and he cannot blame me for not employing him. I did not employ him because I did not have position available at the time not because of his ethnicity. Over the years we have employed staff from 25 different nationalities and I did not like to be attacked by this angry person.
I do not condone the extreme situations we have seen in the media and the changes in the law do not promote it so not sure why someone needs to gather the community members to discuss this. This will only make people worried more over what some artist might put in his painting or a play and is all based on good faith not to offend any particular group. Someone has misinterpreted the changes to make issue and raise them selves as community leaders.

We saw this in Indian media when few attacks on Indian nationals were interpreted as attack on all Indians and caused relationship breakdown between India and Australia. In fact they were just small proportion of normal criminal activity not targeting one ethical group. People of races and colors get mugged, killed and beaten up not just one group as portrayed in the Indian media.
We have seen crime in Chinese community raise dramatically in the past 10 years but we do not see the headlines in China saying Chinese are being targeted, because it is not racial motivated activity, it is criminal activity.
Many people feel embarrassed when people from their ethical groups start raising racism as issue because many do not experience it. Yes, there are some small proportion of the population who think this way but this new law will not give right to those people to offend everyone they meet.

An let's face it if a group of people made of different ethical backgrounds gathers and two are from same they will immediately start speaking in their language. This makes some people who do not speak that language feel offended and they might comment on this and there it goes to be called racism. So who was racist in this group? it was the two people who started talking in their own language not the whole group.

It always comes to personal perception and if you do not like listen loud conversations of others just move away instead of falling on same level as those ignorant people who do not care for the rest of the train or the group.

Apologies if I have offended anyone, but if we look deep inside of ourselves we all have these feelings sometimes and they are healthy but if they get abused for the wrong reason and to be used as excuse. Racism used to be similar to patriotism many people mix up the terms.

What is the big fuss about such an Ad? It is stating what we do in Australia- In India people do all those things - nothing different! except some do in secret, to hide from "religious police" (BJP-Hindu Nationalists!).
Hindu Nationalist Govt of India persecute Muslims and Christians in many places (churches burnt, & Christians attacked after the BJP victory in recent elections!). Is that racial discrimination? At least we don't do that in Australia! We have freedom. 300 million dalits are treated like slaves, untouchables, and discarded from socitey, Indian women are raped, killed and hanged, - Is it sexual or any other kind of discrimination?
