Migration (Arrangements for Visitor (Class FA) visa applications) Amendment (LIN 24/084) Instrument 2024

Migration Update: Expansion of Visitor Visa Eligibility

The Australian Government has implemented changes to the Visitor (Class FA) visa (Subclass 600) through the Migration (Arrangements for Visitor (Class FA) Visa Applications) Amendment (LIN 24/084) Instrument 2024, effective 7 December 2024. These amendments expand access to the Frequent Traveller Stream (FTS) and enhance opportunities for eligible nationals to travel to Australia for business and tourism.

Key Changes

1. Expanded Eligibility for the Frequent Traveller Stream (FTS):

  • Nationals from the following 11 countries are now eligible:
    • Brunei Darussalam
    • Cambodia
    • Indonesia
    • Lao People’s Democratic Republic
    • Malaysia
    • The People’s Republic of China
    • The Philippines
    • Singapore
    • Thailand
    • Timor-Leste
    • Viet Nam

2. Removal of Location Restrictions:

  • Applicants are no longer required to be located in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) or hold a PRC passport to apply for the Frequent Traveller Stream.
  • Applications can now be lodged by individuals outside Australia irrespective of their location.

3. Long-Term Visa Option:

  • The Frequent Traveller Stream offers a visa valid for up to 10 years, permitting stays of up to 3 months per visit.

Purpose of the Amendment

These changes are designed to strengthen Australia’s relationships with ASEAN member countries and Timor-Leste, aligning with the Government’s broader migration strategy. The amendments facilitate easier travel, enhance regional engagement, and support economic and cultural ties.

Implications for Applicants

Eligible nationals from the listed countries now benefit from simplified access to the Frequent Traveller Stream, enabling long-term travel opportunities for business and leisure.

These updates reflect Australia’s commitment to fostering regional connectivity and supporting a dynamic migration framework.
