Migration (ANZSCO Definition) Specification 2024 - Regulation 1.03 - Migration Regulations 1994

The Australian Government has implemented the Migration (ANZSCO Definition) Specification 2024 (LIN 24/105), effective 7 December 2024, to update the definition of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) within the Migration Regulations 1994. This amendment ensures that migration processes align with the most current occupational classifications, reflecting contemporary labour market requirements.

Key Changes

  1. Updated ANZSCO References:

    • The majority of the Migration Regulations will now reference ANZSCO Version 1.2 (published 27 June 2013).
    • For specific provisions, including regulations 2.72, 2.73, and subregulation 5.19(5), the 2022 ANZSCO update (published 23 November 2022) will be applied.
  2. Centralized Definitions:

    • This instrument consolidates the definition of ANZSCO, repealing earlier definitions found in Migration (LIN 19/051).

Purpose of the Amendment

The updated ANZSCO definitions aim to provide greater clarity and ensure migration decisions are informed by the most accurate and relevant occupational classifications. This approach supports the Government’s broader strategy of aligning skilled migration with current labour market demands.

Consultation and Alignment

  • These changes follow consultation with key stakeholders, including the Ministerial Advisory Council on Skilled Migration (MACSM) and the Skilled Migration Officials Group (SMOG).
  • The amendments are consistent with other reforms introduced under the Migration Amendment (2024 Measures No. 1) Regulations.

Implications for Stakeholders

  • Employers: The updated ANZSCO definitions provide a reliable and current reference for nominating skilled migrants.
  • Visa Applicants: Clearer occupational classifications enhance transparency and consistency in the application process.

This amendment reflects the Government’s commitment to maintaining a modern, efficient migration framework that meets the evolving needs of Australia’s workforce and economy.
