Education Provider Update (Student Visa Program) - July 2024

The latest Provider Update for July 2024 covers significant developments and statistics related to Student and Temporary Graduate visas. Key points include:

Student and Temporary Graduate Visa Data:

  • There were 580,193 student visa applications lodged globally in the 2023-24 program year, a 1.75% decrease compared to the previous year.
  • The grant rate for applications lodged in Australia was 83.7%, while it was 78.3% for those lodged outside Australia.

Recent Changes in the Student Visa Program:

  • A series of reforms were introduced to support the integrity of the international education system and genuine international students, including the Genuine Student Requirement, English language requirements, and financial capacity requirements.

Migration Strategy Outreach Campaign:

  • Between April and June 2024, the Department conducted an outreach campaign with 60 sessions across 50 stakeholders, reaching approximately 1,200 attendees.

Changes to TIS Eligibility for International Students:

  • Effective 1 July 2024, international students are no longer eligible for the Free Translating Service.

Business, Industry, and Regional Outreach and Engagement (BIRO):

  • The BIRO network has delivered a webinar series on the International Graduate Visa Pathway to assist international graduates and employers in understanding visa options and requirements.

Education Provider Responsibilities:

  • Providers must ensure their education agents act ethically and comply with the National Code to attract quality students and maintain positive visa outcomes.

PRISMS Agent Management Dashboard:

  • A tool to help providers monitor the performance of their education agents and ensure compliance with visa application processes.

Visa Processing Times:

  • Current processing times are impacted by additional scrutiny applied during assessments, with recommended timeframes for different priority categories.

Integrity in the Student Visa Program:

  • Emphasis on the importance of pre-screening practices by education institutions to maintain the integrity of the Student visa program.
