Clarification of "immediate family" of Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents re entry to Australia during Coronavirus "denial of entry" period

Migration Alliance released news here about the denial of entry of persons coming from China which stated the following:

Australia will deny entry to anyone who has left or transited mainland China from 1 February, with the exception of Australian citizens, permanent residents, immediate family members of Australian citizens and permanent residents including spouses, minor dependents and legal guardians.

Migration Alliance has sought further advice in relation to the wording in the above statement.  That advice is as follows:

People should take a common sense approach to the definition of "immediate family member".

This would ordinarily include children, dependents, spouse/partner, immediate carer/guardians of Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.   It could also include parent members of the family unit, and vital caregivers.

It would NOT ordinarily include cousins, aunt/uncle and other non-immediate relatives of Australian Citizens or Permanent Residents.

Each person's situation will be assessed on its own merits, and on a case-by-case basis.  The Department of Home Affairs will be as fair as possible, but top priority is public safety.

Hi, I’m an Australian citizen, my mum lives in Mumbai and I’m her only child. My dad passed away in 2016 and since then she visits me and stays with me for a year, goes back for 6 months and comes back to me as it is one of her visa conditions.
She is solely depending on me, at present she has valid 600 visa, but she is not allowed to enter Australia, as she is not considered immediate family member. In this time of crisis she is by herself in Mumbai without any help. She is 65 year old and is going through emotional issues as she is left alone.
Can you please advise me as what can be done as I don’t agree with the definition of immediate family member by immigration department, parents of Australian citizens should be considered as immediate family member.

We aren new temporary visa 870 holders - parents to 100 % of children being OZ citizens - and were about to join them in March. We had to call the movers back!!!
We feel left out, abandoned, shut off, on top of seeing no planes flying nor end to travel ban in sight. Sorry, we are waiting for permanent residence since applying in 2017, we prefer to keep my name withheld...

In regard to my previous today comment on visa 870 holders stuck outside Australia and away from their family, I just stumbled on an Australia visa law article about MOFU (members of family unit - I thought only the French could come up with such acronyms! Ha ha), MOFU definition was amended in November 2016, and limiting members. Wo4w! It left me speechless!
    Regards.

    Thanks for the newsletter.

I am a permanent resident. My son is now older than 18 years old and currently holding a student visa. Is he still considered to be "immediate family member" and able to re-enter Australia ?

    Hello fellow members

Anyone has a successful case on whether "immediate family member" can include parents and hence successfully applying for an exemption?

If so I will be grateful if anyone can share.

    Hello,
In terms of gaining a permit to leave Australia on compassionate grounds, would a "close relative" include a brother- in - law?

    Thank you
