Business Innovation Visas: Questions before assigning a Fund Manager

Business Innovation visa applicants make a huge commitment on two fronts.

Not only are they looking at settling in a new country, but they will be also investing substantial amounts of monies in a new business/investment environment.

Investments have to be made in SIV complying investments as defined by the Department of Home Affairs, Australia.

Investments have to be made for a minimum stipulated period of time, and a minimum amount (in AUD).

Hence, it is rather critical that the applicant chooses the Fund Manager/Service Provider appropriately. It is very challenging to change a Fund Manager midstream given the strict requirements for the grant of visas.

Choosing a Fund Manager is not as straightforward as one may think. Proper due diligence needs to be conducted before committing to investments.

Questions to be addressed before Assigning a Fund Manager

    • Is the Fund Manager independent or biased, directly or indirectly, to funds managed by themselves or parent Fund Manager?
    • Would all the complying investments be held under one umbrella?
    • Will the funds be managed based on the client profile or in Standardised Funds?
    • Would the Fund manager be able to assist beyond investments in SIV complying funds?
    • What are the fees charged on the investments?
    • What is the return expectation on the investments?
    • What happens after the stipulated compliant investment period?
    • Is the Fund manager a Global Fund manager even though only investing in Australia for SIV complying investments?
    • Would the Fund manager be able to provide end of year accounting reports for all the investments?
    • Are they able to provide further investment opportunities for the client?
