Australia's migrant visa system is essential for business

According to a report just released, HR managers support the employment of skilled migrants to assist with skill shortages in Australia but see flaws in the new Temporary Short- Term Visa scheme (TSS) that replaced the 457 Visa scheme last year.

The report sets out the findings from a survey of members of the Australian HR Institute (AHRI) conducted late last year. Of the 383 respondents to the survey, more than eight out of 10 (84 per cent) believe a skilled migrant scheme is needed in Australia, three-quarters (75 per cent) report their organisation has benefited from employing skilled migrants, with 72 per cent reporting that skilled migrants have transferred their skills to other employees.

In addition, more than nine out of 10 (93 per cent) report that they make an attempt to fill skill vacancies in Australia first, and 73 per cent report that sponsoring foreign workers has not affected their capacity to recruit Australians.
