Breaking Australian immigration news brought to you by Migration Alliance and associated bloggers. Please email help@migrationalliance.com.au
The Liberal government seems to be overhauling everything and anything with the word “Immigration” attached. Just when we all thought it couldn’t get any more interesting, changes to the Australian Citizenship requirements as well as general eligibility were announced!
By way of background, initial discussions earlier this year seemed to indicate that the proposed changes to Australian citizenship eligibility would likely be implemented at some stage this year. These changes were originally scheduled to come into effect on or around December 2017. We now have access to new citizenship requirements which are published on the Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s website with immediate effect.
Changes include:
As mentioned the effect is immediate which means that any applications made on or after 20 April 2017 are subject to the above rules. The Department assures that “the changes will not apply to applications made before 20 April 2017 (that is, the current rules will continue to apply to applications made before 20 April 2017)”.
If you have lodged an application for Australian Citizenship, the Department of Immigration may be in contact with you to request additional information as appropriate. If you are lodging an application on behalf of a client or yourself, you will need to be familiar with the new requirements to avoid any unnecessary delays with processing of your application.

I was on a PR visa since 12th May 2012, but forgot that there was a clause saying "cannot enter Australia after 12th May 2017" and went overseas on a holiday in July 2017 without getting a resident return visa. I was not allowed to check in at my home country's airport, but after the officer at the counter called the Australian Border Service, I was allowed to board and was given a border visa when I landed in Perth and asked to obtain a resident return visa asap. I'm now on this new resident return visa issued in July 2017. This is the date that shows up on my VEVO site. I tried lodge my citizenship application online today, but it refused to go through due to "my not being a PR long enough". Does this mean that the previous 4- 5 years I spent living and working in Australia on my previous PR visa will not count for anything? I'm so furious at myself. Has anyone been in my shoes or know of someone who has been?
Question....with all the "hoo hah", happening over Federal MP's and dual citizenship, how does this affect me.?? My parents were born in NZ. My grand-parents were born in NZ. My great grandmother, however was born in England, yet moved to NZ. My great/great grandmother was Australian and her husband was English, they both moved to NZ. If none of them renounced their citizenship, are they still English and Australian and does that make me eligible for both a British and Australian passport by descent.???
I was able to submit my citizenship application online around 15th May. When I login to immi account, it shows the application has been received and that's all. I have paid my fees as well. I am thinking of withdrawing my application and see if they can reimburse the fees I've paid.
Anyone else have suggestion for me ?
Thanks
