The Australian Immigration authorities have deported more criminals with mental health conditions back to New Zealand without warning the officials in the country about the state of their minds. These people are dangerous, as they have been involved in criminal activities in the past and are clinically insane.

About the Deportees

In December 2014, the Australian Immigration authorities tightened immigration laws under section Act 501 that stated that the visas of anyone with more than 12 months of imprisonment or for people who have committed offences against children are to be deported immediately.

As a result, New Zealand citizens being deported have increased six fold and around 1000 people are to be deported in the next 5 years. Most of the people sent back to New Zealand are criminals who have served their time in jail in Australia or after stints in immigration detention centers. A majority of these people have lived in Australia almost all of their lives and do not have any links with friends or family in New Zealand.

The sharing of information between Australian and New Zealand Immigration Authorities

After concern drawn from the authorities in New Zealand over the deportation, and that they were not informed when these dangerous criminals were sent to the country, mental health experts alerted the government of the dangerous move, as it was releasing dangerous people into the society and therefore, is dangerous to locals in New Zealand.

An NGO received a number of undefined deportees that caused the Health authorities to detect that these came into the country without informing the immigration officials.

The agreement between the two countries was signed in September last year, and it was agreed that they coordinate with each other about the deportees. The agreement had been in talks for several years. An information sharing deal was also signed by the authorities that stated that Australia will have to give a 6-month advance notice to New Zealand before the criminals are deported.

The agreement was signed in September 2015 and discussed several issues. It was ensured that information such as criminal conviction records, gang connections and fingerprints was also included in the agreement for proper criminal records.

The potential risks to the public in New Zealand

According to the documents released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Australia show that the country has deported rapists, sex offenders, drug dealers, bikers, murderers, kidnappers and violent robbers to New Zealand. Officials say that about three out of five of these deportees are of high risk of repeating the offences they were imprisoned for.

As these people have few or no ties in the country, the fact that these ‘high risk’ individuals are a threat to the local population.
