Crash and burn: MIA announces EGM cancellation

The following message has been sent out to all MIA members:

The Board of the MIA has today passed the following motion:

"That the Board rescinds the motion that it had proposed to be considered by Members at an Extraordinary General Meeting to be held on 18 February 2015 and the Board therefore cancels that Extraordinary General Meeting.

In consideration of Members' concerns, questions about the technical validity of processes and the need for wider consultation, the Board acknowledges the need for a more comprehensive process to ensure wider consultation".

Liana Allan's open letter to Angela Chan made sense.

We have not sent our proxies through to the MIA yet.   Just how many proxies did Angela Chan have?  And how many did Angela Chan think we had?

Weren't there 4 motions?  Plural.

Who is really in control of the MIA?

Congratulations to Liana, John Hourigan, Sharon Harris, and everybody who stood up and made their opinions known on these important issues. Not sure what "a more comprehensive process to ensure wider consultation" means, but I think translated into plain English it might be something like "the members didn't want these 4 motions shoved down their throats as a single motion, as evidenced by the worst PR the MIA has had in recent time, and we're going to have to reluctantly give up on our "director for life" appointments for the time being."

Look, the MIA does great things, but this had to rank as one of the worst self-inflicted injuries I've seen. As a pub commentator recently said candidly about Tony Abbott's knighting debacle, "he just kicked himself in the nuts." Indeed.

"the Board acknowledges the need for a more comprehensive process to ensure wider consultation".

Sounds straight from Tony Abott's script this week (and about as popular?):)

Congratulations again Liana. Donald Leslie Chipp, popularly knows as the late Senator DON CHIPP, would be very proud of you for "keeping them honest"

Don Chipp didn't say "keeping them honest". He said "keeping the bastards honest". The MIA likes to draw comparisons - likening the Board's role to that of the US President. So maybe Don Chipp's comments were actually very prophetic in terms of the MIA.

This was always headed for disaster. I had intended to fly from Queensland to oppose the proposal which was based on spurious arguments relating to other non-comparable organisations across the world. Whoever wrote that should be sacked.

The board should resign so that fresh blood can be injected into the MIA.

Comparing the Presidency of the USA to MIA situation was pathetic and shows delusion. Sack who wrote it. Agree Paul.

The writer (of the comparison) should be given the chance to resign before being sacked.

That would be the honourable thing to do for his or her outrageous comments and comparisons.
